Rockpool Guardians; Volunteers Day

For summer holiday volunteers

  • Beaches Vary dependent on season and tide

Service Description

Our new Rockpool Guardians project teaches people (all ages) to how to go Rockpooling in a Wildlife friendly way. They learn about the creatures that call rockpools their homes and how to protect them from injury, disturbance and destruction and why, now more than ever, we need to. Our planet's biodiversity is in decline and we must do everything we can to respect, connect and protect the living things that exist around us. This project is funded by the Nature Networks Programme. It is being delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government. WHAT WE NEED We need people with kind hands and kind hearts, with an interest in all things marine to help us spread the message. We need cover on 2 beaches, namely Ogmore Beach in the Vale of Glamorgan and Rest Bay Beach in Porthcawl over the entire summer holiday period. The summer holiday period runs 20 July - 1 September 2024. WHY These beaches are a hive of activity and has a huge footfall during the summer holidays. Rockpools here get lots of use, and we need to simply make people aware of a better way to do it. WHAT YOU WOULD DO AS A VOLUNTEER - You would pick a beach and be on site there for a 4 hour shift (2 hours before and 2 hours after low tide) when the rockpools are accessible by the public. We will tell you when that is. - Volunteers would be expected to set up and strike the equipment on their own. - Note that the times WILL NOT be the same every day as the tides change daily. Some days we will not have volunteers on the beach at all. - You would be manning a ‘pop up’ rockpool to chat to the public coming to the beach about the project and show them the correct way to go rockpooling (which you will learn on our training days) before they head onto the beach, and give them our ‘Rockpool Code’ to follow whilst they are there, or hand them the correct - You would not be expected to attend the beach if it was a very rainy day. - There is no minimum or maximum number of shifts. WHAT'S INVOLVED IN THE VOLUNTEERS TRAINING DAY During your day you will meet the Beach Academy education team, who will teach you the Rockpool Guardians ‘Rockpool Code’ and show you the correct way to go rockpooling. At the end of the session, you will then be expected to sign up to our summer holiday rota on the days that you fancy. We all also keep in touch throughout the summer and have a beach party at the end of the summer to say thanks.
